This past Saturday night the #12 Eagles held their home opener against conference rival University of Rhode Island in front of a rowdy crowd. After a lengthy month break from game action, Boston College was ready to return to the field and improve their 4-3 record. URI presented the Eagles with their first look at the improved and talented PCLL. From the opening faceoff BC showed no signs of rust, and dominated URI in all phases of the game, ultimately resulting in a 19-2 victory. Riding stellar faceoff play (Griffin Carney ‘18 going 11/14 and 1 goal, Charlie Utsch ’20 going 4/4, and AJ Leva ’20 going 2/2) the Eagles offense was able to effectively play a make it- take it style. The first half saw an offensive explosion behind seniors Kevin Sheridan and David Hincks’ combined 7 goal and 1 assist performance (Sheridan 4 goals, Hincks 3 goals). Gerard Quinn ’18 added 1 goal and 2 assists, while Spencer Bromley (GS) put 2 in the back of the net. The defense effectively eliminated all URI scoring opportunities shutting them out in the first half 14-0.
The healthy lead allowed Coach DeDonatis to turn to his bench for the second half. Senior midfielders Kevin “Let It” Snow and Christian Backe electrified the crowd rocketing their first goals of the season past the URI goalie (Backe 2 goals). In addition, many players took advantage of the opportunity to compete and continued the offensive and defensive success. Barry Mitchell ’21 and Rish Basu ’21 netted their first career goals (Basu 2 goals), while Nick Yennaco ’18 and Colin Trimble ’20 added to their goal total with one each. Young defensemen played valuable minutes, and held the opposing offense to only 2 goals. Mike O’Keeffe ’18, Culver Duquette ’19, and Paul Kern ’21 all played solid with a combined 9 saves against 2 goals. Boston College looks to continue their conference success with games against #13 UConn on April 14th and Buffalo on April 14th.
After the game, the current Boston College players were joined on the field by 28 former players from throughout the program’s history for the annual alumni game.
