This November, the Boston College men’s club lacrosse team decided to participate in Movember, which aims to raise awareness and research for men’s physical and mental health issues such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and depression.
Movember, a combination of Mustache and November, was founded by the Movember Foundation, a group committed to growing awareness and support for all things men’s health. According to the foundation’s website, prostate cancer is the second most common cancer found in men, and testicular cancer rates have doubled in the past 50 years.
In order to combat this, the Movember Foundation has grown to be the largest non-government investor in prostate cancer research in the world, and funded the largest comprehensive sequencing study of testicular tumors published to date.
The donations made by Movember participants and donors bolster countless research programs such as the Global Action Plan, TrueNTH and Prostate Cancer Outcomes. However, research is not the foundation’s only target. The Movember Foundation looks to prevent these deadly diseases and health issues through education and to build support systems for men currently receiving cancer treatment or recovering. An equally important goal of the foundation is to educate men on the negative effects the modern idea of masculinity has on men’s mental health.
All 45 members of the men’s club lacrosse team pledged to grow their mustache’s over the course of November in support of the Movember Foundation and to raise funds for the amazing cause. After only one day of fundraising, the Eagles met their original goal of $2,000 dollars, and have since set a new goal of $5,000 dollars.
“I think it is important for us to participate because often times men are discouraged from reporting or talking about health problems; specifically mental health,” says Mike O’Keeffe ’18, who organized the fundraising campaign with the help of John Kenney ’18. “Charities like the Movember Foundation try to remove the stigma around men’s health issues while simultaneously having some fun. We mainly hope to achieve awareness about the importance of having a healthy lifestyle and to raise as much money as we can to continue to save lives.”
